CJI DY Chandrachud:

Attempt to undermine the authority of the judiciary... Concerns were raised over a 'special group', 600 lawyers wrote a letter to CJI.

Lawyers, including notable legal figures such as Harish Salve, Pinky Anand, Manan Kumar Mishra,  Jain, and Hit others, have composed a letter addressed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressing worry over the influence wielded by a specific group within the judiciary. Signed by over 600 legal practitioners, the letter highlights concerns regarding efforts to undermine the judiciary's authority and independence.
The lawyers argue that this "special group" is employing tactics to exert pressure through the judicial system, mainly targeting cases linked with political figures and allegations of corruption. They contend that such actions pose a threat to the democratic structure and the trust placed in judicial processes. The timing of the letter, just ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, underscores the urgency of the matter.

The letter also accuses this group of propagating false narratives about the judiciary's "golden era" to manipulate ongoing proceedings and diminish public confidence in the courts. It alleges that the group operates under a strategy of criticizing or praising court decisions based on their political agendas, a tactic commonly known as the "my way or the highway" approach.

Furthermore, the letter highlights the troubling trend of politicians levelling corruption accusations against individuals and then seeking refuge within the judicial system. If court rulings do not align with their expectations, they resort to criticizing the judiciary both within the courts and through the media.
In response to these concerns, the lawyers call for decisive action from the Supreme Court to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary during this critical period, recalling similar appeals made during the 2018-2019 period. They urge all supporters of justice to unite in defending the judiciary's integrity to ensure it remains a pillar of democracy.
