Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest: Who Could Take Over as Delhi's Chief Minister?

Following Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, discussions are underway regarding who could potentially assume the position of Delhi's Chief Minister. With Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain also detained, Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj are considered strong contenders. There's also speculation about Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal's wife, stepping in.
However, legal experts suggest that while there might be no legal hindrances to such transitions, it could pose practical challenges. The daily functioning of a Chief Minister from behind bars could compromise both governance and jail security.
Should Kejriwal resign, the party faces the challenge of finding a capable leader to manage the Delhi government's responsibilities in his absence. Additionally, with elections looming, a leader who can steer the party's course effectively is needed.
Potential candidates for the next Chief Minister of Delhi include Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, both currently holding significant roles in the Delhi government. Atishi oversees departments such as Education, Finance, and Revenue, while Saurabh Bhardwaj is a vital member of the Delhi cabinet, whose responsibilities include urban development and health, among others.
As the AAP grapples with these decisions, the party's December campaign, "Main Bhi Kejriwal," already gauged public opinion on whether Kejriwal should resign or continue leading from jail. The majority supported Kejriwal's continued leadership, emphasizing that his mandate as Chief Minister remains intact regardless of his location.
Ultimately, the decision rests with the AAP leadership, which includes figures like Atishi, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, and Sunita Kejriwal, who could step into leadership roles.
