The Maldives and India have been experiencing tension lately, and the Maldivian Foreign Minister, Musa Zameer, is coming to India amid this tension.

On May 9, 2024, he will visit India for one day. He will meet with his Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar, to discuss bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Maldives is an important maritime partner of India in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), and it is expected that Foreign Minister Musa Zameer's visit will further promote bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

This is Musa Zamir's first official visit to India after taking charge of the Ministry of External Affairs. It is worth noting that India had previously announced that it would withdraw its military personnel from the Maldives before May 10, 2024. However, the comment of the island country (Maldives government) came before the deadline of May 10, which was set by President Mohammed Muizzu, who is considered pro-China, to remove Indian troops from the Maldives altogether. The government of the Maldives stated on May 7, 2024, that India has so far recalled 51 soldiers from there.

The Maldives government had previously announced that Indian soldiers were being withdrawn from the country in two batches, but they did not provide specific details about this process. Chief spokesperson of the President's Office, Heena Waleed, addressed this issue on Monday, stating that a total of 51 Indian soldiers have been sent back so far. The news portal 'Edition. Mv' quoted Heena Waleed as saying, "All Indian military personnel in the country will be withdrawn from Maldives by May 10. So far, 51 soldiers deployed on two platforms have been sent back." According to the initial announcement of the Maldives government, 88 Indian soldiers are stationed in the country, along with two helicopters, one Dornier aircraft, and the Senahiya Military Hospital.

India has already recalled some military personnel running three aviation platforms in the Maldives. Civilian technical experts from India have replaced these military personnel. Both countries have earlier agreed to remove the remaining Indian soldiers there before May 10, 2024. In this regard, the fourth meeting of the bilateral high-level core group of both sides was held in New Delhi on May 3.
