The National Commission for Backward Classes stated that the Karnataka government has included Muslims of the state in the OBC (Other Backward Classes) list.

The National Commission for Backward Classes has voiced its opposition to the Karnataka government's decision to include Muslims in the state's Other Backward Classes (OBC) list for reservation benefits. This move by the Karnataka government has significant implications, as it involves categorizing all Muslims in the state under OBC for employment and educational institution reservations. Under Category II-B, all Muslims of Karnataka are considered part of the OBC list. The NCBC Chairperson, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, stated that the Karnataka government's inclusion of all Muslim communities in the state's OBC list for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions has been communicated to the National Commission for Backward Classes. He emphasized that communities like Muslims and Christians are neither caste nor religion. The Muslim population in Karnataka is 12.92%, considered a religious minority. According to the 2011 census, the number of Muslim residents in Karnataka is 12.32%.
