Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday disqualified jailed former prime minister Imran Khan for five years after being convicted in a corruption case. Khan, 70, was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a trial court in Islamabad in the Toshakhana corruption case. The court held Khan guilty of earning money by selling gifts he had received during his tenure as prime minister. He was arrested by the Punjab Police from his private residence Zaman Park in Lahore, after the court sentenced him.On Tuesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan issued a notification disqualifying Khan for five years. The ECP cited the court's judgment and said that Khan was disqualified under Article 63(1) of the Constitution, read with Section 232 of the Election Act-2017. According to a copy of the notification accessed by PTI, "Imran Khan Niazi is disqualified for five years."

At the same time, in Pakistan's Punjab province, more than 200 supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have been arrested, and among them are those who opposed his arrest in the corruption case. The police gave this information on Tuesday. Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan (70) was found guilty of "corruption" in the Toshakhana case by an Islamabad court and sentenced to three years in prison. Soon after that, he was arrested from his Zaman Park residence here on Saturday. He is currently in Attock jail in Punjab province.
Over a dozen of Khan's supporters were booked on terrorism charges.
According to the Punjab Police, more than 200 PTI office-bearers and workers have been arrested since Khan's arrest in different parts of the province. However, PTI has alleged that not only did the police contain its workers protesting against Khan's arrest, but it also raided the houses of party functionaries to detain them. Police said over a dozen Khan supporters had been booked on terrorism charges. According to the FIR, people accompanying Khan, including his media team, had threatened the police team which had gone to arrest him on Saturday.
The FIR states, "They assaulted and snatched government guns from policemen and threatened to kill them by pointing guns at them. The police later arrested him." Meanwhile, PTI's advocate wing, Insaf Lawyers Forum, protested outside the Lahore High Court on Monday and Tuesday, and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Sharif protested against the conviction of their leader in a "fake case."
