Adenovirus Outbreak: Two Children Dead in a Week, Do Not Ignore These Symptoms.

A senior health official revealed that the city has witnessed the tragic demise of two children due to adenovirus infection in the past week.According to reports, one child breathed their last in a hospital just last Friday, while another succumbed to the virus a week earlier at the Dr. BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences. Additionally, several children are currently undergoing treatment for adenovirus at Park Circus Hospital.

Understanding Adenovirus:
Adenovirus, while typically causing mild symptoms akin to a common cold or flu, can also trigger severe infections, particularly among infants, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms associated with adenovirus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, swollen eyes, diarrhea, and vomiting. In severe cases, adenovirus can lead to complications such as pneumonia.

Modes of Transmission:
Adenovirus spreads through various means:When an infected person coughs or sneezes, virus-laden droplets disperse into the air. Inhalation of these droplets can lead to infection.
The virus can survive on contaminated surfaces like doorknobs, tables, and toys, posing a risk of transmission upon contact followed by touching of the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Some adenoviruses can spread via the feces of infected individuals, such as during diaper changing. Contact with contaminated fecal matter can result in transmission.
Adenovirus can also spread through water sources like swimming pools or hot tubs, with ingestion of contaminated water serving as a route of infection.
Current Scenario in Kolkata:
Hospitals across Kolkata have reported a substantial surge in adenovirus cases in recent weeks, with pediatric wards particularly inundated. Experts attribute this surge to the weakened immune systems of children, possibly stemming from prolonged confinement at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
