The Kolkata Police found Azim's body in pieces. He had been missing for the past eight days. Anwarul Azim had come to West Bengal for treatment. According to Kolkata Police, this was a premeditated murder.

According to the website of the Bangladesh Parliament, Azim was a member of the Awami League. He served as a Member of Parliament three times and hailed from Madhuganj in the Khulna Division. Besides being a parliamentarian, Azim was also involved in business and farming. He represented Constituency 84.

As per the Bangladeshi newspaper, The Business Standard, a Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police stated, "His body was found dismembered. Some parts of the body were recovered from a flat in New Town, Kolkata." Sources from Kolkata Police revealed that the flat belonged to an Excise Duty officer.
